Going Beyond In Missions
In early August, a mission team from Woodcreek Church in Richardson, TX, joined Every Orphan’s Hope for an immersive four-day experience, delving deep into the heart of the ministry. Their days were packed with learning and hands-on experiences, gaining a behind-the-scenes perspective of both the beautiful successes and the very real challenges faced in caring for children without family support. It was a transformative journey, uncovering the joys and complexities of this vital work.
The team hit the ground running, pouring their hearts into the children at the Baby Homes, playing and laughing with them and hearing powerful stories from key staff members. Hellen shared her inspiring journey of founding the Baby Homes, Marcie, the Baby Homes manager, painted a picture of the daily rhythms of life for the children, and Janet, the social work team manager, explained the delicate process of working with the Zambian government to find the best family solutions for each child.
One of the trip’s sweetest moments was the tour of the ministry’s bike shop and bakery, where Charles guided the team through, and they had the joy of sampling fresh bread and donuts. The team spent time with each Mama and then enjoyed a traditional meal under the insaka. Abigail, the Family Homes manager, shared the harsh realities of Zambia’s education crisis.
The team’s time with the children of the Family Homes was filled with joy, whether they were teaching them line dances, playing soccer, or reading books together. These moments of connection were precious. They also participated in a prayer walk through the Afterschool Academy, praying over each classroom and counseling room, knowing this space would soon be filled with hope and learning.
The trip was also an opportunity for deep dialogue. The team had a meaningful Q&A session with the Executive Leadership Team, followed by a relaxed lunch where they felt free to ask the hard questions and have honest, open conversations.
To round out their time, the team spent an evening with the Young Adults, sharing laughter, dancing, games, and pizza, creating memories and connections that would last long beyond their time in Africa. In just four days, the team experienced the heart of this ministry—a heart that beats for every child in our care.
